What are REGOs?
A REGO, or ‘Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin’ to use its full title, is a certificate issued to an energy generator – a wind or solar farm for instance – when it generates a unit of green power. They allow generators to prove that a certain amount of green electricity has gone into the Grid.
How do REGOs work?
REGOs show electricity has been generated from renewable sources. Electricity suppliers use REGOs to show customers the renewable content of electricity they’ve supplied each year. You’ll receive one REGO per MWh of electricity you generate and you sell REGOs in a bundle with the electricity you sell.
Does ovo use REGOs?
The supplier also questions Ovo’s use of Regos, and the premium it charges customers for its green tariff. (Renewable energy guarantees of origin, or Regos, are certificates issued for every megawatt hour of power generated by renewable sources.
What are renewable energy certificates UK?
In the UK, REGOs certify that the power a consumer buys is renewable. As REGOs can be traded that means one supplier, sourcing 100% of their energy from renewables, and another simply buying enough REGOs to cover 100% of their output can both say they are 100% renewable.
Can I buy REGOs?
REGOs can only be used once to demonstrate that a unit of electricity is from a particular renewable energy source. But, they can be bought and sold separately from the actual unit of electricity that came from the renewable generator.
What are REGOs energy?
What is it? The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme provides transparency to consumers about the proportion of electricity that suppliers source from renewable generation. All EU Member States are required to have such a scheme.
Do REGOs have a value?
“REGO values continue to vary by technology, with unfuelled technologies (e.g. wind, solar and hydro) commanding higher REGO values than for fuelled technologies (e.g. landfill gas, biomass and energy from waste).
Are REGOs greenwashing?
What is ‘greenwashing’? In the context of energy tariffs, greenwashing is the act of purchasing certificates (known as REGOs) by a supplier without buying the power they relate to.
Are renewable obligation certificates still available?
The RO came into effect in 2002 in England and Wales, and Scotland, followed by Northern Ireland in 2005. It places an obligation on UK electricity suppliers to source an increasing proportion of the electricity they supply from renewable sources. The RO closed to all new generating capacity on 31 March 2017.
Does good energy use REGOs?
At Good Energy, we buy our 100% renewable electricity from over 1,600 independent generators, investing in the industry to help it grow. You can learn more about how we source our electricity here, and learn more about REGOs and greenwashing here.
How green is green electricity?
‘Green electricity’ means electricity produced from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro. They have a much lower environmental impact than fossil fuels like coal and gas.
What replaced Renewable Obligation Certificates?
The UK Government has proposed wide-ranging reforms to the UK electricity market which will eventually see feed-in tariffs with contracts for difference (CfD) replace the Renewables Obligation as the main renewable generation support mechanism.
